Retain Members with Discounts and Pausing
Creators can create retention discounts that are shown to fans when they try to cancel an eligible membership. Fans may also be offered the option to pause instead of canceling.
## Create a retention discount
1. Go to Discounts & Trials.
2. Select Add Discount or Free Trial.
3. Choose the membership.
4. Select Fans Canceling (Retention).
5. Set the discount percentage.
6. Choose how long the discount lasts.
7. Set how many people can use it.
8. Set an expiration date, or choose Retention Discount does not expire.
Retention discounts are shown to fans during cancellation and can only be redeemed by a fan once every 6 months.
Retention discounts are not available for lifetime memberships.
## What fans see when canceling
When a fan cancels a recurring membership:
1. They go to Membership.
2. They select the membership and choose Cancel Subscription.
3. They complete the feedback step.
4. They confirm they want to cancel.
5. If a retention discount is available, they can accept the discount or continue canceling.
6. Before final cancellation, they may be offered Pause Membership.
Pause options include 1 month, 3 months, or 6 months. If paused, the membership pauses starting from the next billing cycle and resumes automatically after the selected pause period. Fans can resume earlier from the membership page.
## Share discount and free trial links
For regular discounts and free trials, creators can share a direct link:
1. Go to Discounts & Trials.
2. Open the discount or free trial.
3. Select Share Direct Link.
4. Copy the URL and share it with fans.
When fans open a valid direct discount link, they’re taken to checkout with the discount applied.
Direct links are available for membership and shop item discounts/free trials when supported. Retention discounts are shown during cancellation, not shared as direct links.
